Backpacks and hydration packs

Three types under one name

This category brings together three products designed for different uses, and capacity alone won’t tell you which is which.

  • The hydration pack, 2–12 L: compact and close-fitting against the back, designed primarily to carry water and the bare essentials. This is the MTB and cross-country format.
  • The hydration vest, 2–14 L: a vest that hugs the torso, with pockets at the front and weight distributed across the shoulders rather than the back. It doesn’t bounce, and you can reach its pockets without stopping.
  • The backpack, 15–30 L: serious carrying capacity for a full-face helmet, protective gear, a jacket, tools and food. This is the format for enduro, shuttle runs and all-day rides.

The harness matters more than capacity

A pack that moves causes chafing and fatigue. Systems with crossed chest straps hold the load steady without tightening around the waist, and that’s what sets a good MTB pack apart from a hiking backpack. Check the fit before the capacity: a secure 12 L pack is more comfortable than an 8 L one that bounces around.

The integrated back protector

Several models include a certified back protector, and that isn’t just a marketing claim: it’s safety equipment, just like a separate back protector. If you ride enduro, bike parks or demanding downhill trails, this should be the deciding factor between two packs of similar capacity.

With or without a hydration bladder

Always check: the bladder is included with some models and optional with others, and the stated pack capacity sometimes includes the bladder. A ‘9 L’ pack may offer 6 L of storage plus a 3 L bladder. Bladders, valves and tubes can be replaced separately — a leaking valve doesn’t mean the whole pack is finished.

Body shape

Women’s versions women’s are available across several ranges: redesigned shoulder straps, a shorter back and a repositioned waist belt. It’s not just a different colour; it’s a different shape, and it makes a real difference to comfort on long rides.
