Cycle touring with panniers

These panniers require a pannier rack : that’s what distinguishes them from bikepacking bags, and it’s also their advantage. They offer far more space, the frame supports the load rather than having it strapped on, and loading and unloading takes one movement.

Single or pair: read carefully

This is the pricing trap in this category. The same range may be sold as a pair and as a single version, and the stated capacity sometimes refers to both bags combined. A ‘40 L’ listing may mean a pair of 20 L bags. Before comparing prices, make sure you’re comparing a pair with a pair.

Front or rear

  • The panniers rear, 20–51 L, carry most of your gear. They’re the minimum you need for a multi-day trip.
  • The panniers front, 12–28 L per pair, mount on a low-rider rack and help balance out a load that’s too far back. On a heavily loaded bike, they steady the steering rather than making it feel heavier.
  • The handlebar handlebars keep things you need while riding within reach. They almost always require a dedicated mount, sometimes sold separately.

Mounting is a question of compatibility

Each brand has its own hook system, and what you need to check is the diameter of your rack tubing : most hooks are adjustable or come with inserts, but not all. Also check the available clearance beneath the rack — a large rear pannier can catch your heel as you pedal or rub against the wheel on a short frame.

Truly waterproof or water-repellent

A pannier with a welded seams and a roll-top closure is waterproof in the strict sense: it can spend a day in the rain and its contents will stay dry. A bag with a flap and zip is water-repellent : it can cope with a shower. On a trip, the difference is whether you spend the night in a dry or damp sleeping bag. Quick-access versions are more practical day to day, but less reliable in a downpour.
