27.5-inch MTB tyres

How to choose a 27.5-inch mountain bike tyre

More manoeuvrable and livelier than 29-inch wheels, 27.5" remains the benchmark for enduro, downhill and smaller bikes. Maxxis, Schwalbe, Hutchinson, Continental and Michelin cover all widths.

What tyre width for my riding style?

• 2.20 to 2.35 : fast cross-country and fast-rolling terrain.
• 2.35 to 2.50 : trail and all-mountain, the most versatile compromise.
• 2.50 and above (up to plus size, 2.6 to 2.8): maximum grip and comfort, with reduced efficiency.

What tread pattern and compound?

• Low knobs : dry terrain, with speed as the priority.
• Tall, widely spaced knobs : mud and rough terrain.
• Mixed tread pattern : the default choice for year-round riding.
• Soft or multi-compound rubber at the front for grip, harder at the rear for longevity.

Can you fit a 27.5-inch wheel at the rear and a 29-inch wheel at the front?

Yes, it is the setup mullet, common in enduro and downhill: the larger front wheel rolls over obstacles more easily, while the smaller rear wheel provides more clearance and makes the bike more playful. Your frame must accommodate both diameters, sometimes via a geometry flip-chip.

What casing and setup?

• Lightweight casing : cross-country and climbs.
• Reinforced casing (EXO+, SuperTrail, DoubleDown…): enduro and rocky terrain.
• The tubeless allows you to lower tyre pressure without the risk of pinch flats.
