What is a gravel chain guide for?

On a 1x setup, nothing keeps the chain from dropping off the inside of the chainring except the tooth profile and the derailleur clutch. On a rough trail, a chain that drops inwards can damage a carbon frame and bring the ride to an abrupt halt. A chain guide is the cheapest insurance against that scenario.

A braze-on mount

All the models in this range mount braze-on, meaning on the braze-on tab intended for the front derailleur on the seat tube. The chain guide simply takes its place. It is a neat solution for a bike converted from 2x to 1x, or a frame sold for a double-chainring setup but built as a 1x. Without that tab, you need a different mounting system.

Low, mid or high sweep

The Wolf Tooth Lonewolf Aero come in three sweep options, low, mid and high sweep, allowing the guide to sit just above the chainring regardless of the tab’s height on your frame or the chainring size. The manufacturer provides a compatibility chart: follow that rather than judging by eye.

Frame-specific versions

Some frames have a proprietary mounting tab shape. Wolf Tooth offers versions designed for Cervélo and ENVE, designed to match their geometry. If you have one of these frames, choose the dedicated version: the generic model will not line up correctly.

Adjustment

Position the guide 2 to 3 mm above the teeth, without ever touching the chain while pedalling, even on the cassette’s largest and smallest sprockets. Set too low, the guide rubs and wears; too high, it serves no purpose.
