Description

The HOPE RX24 700C PRO 5 Standard 12x148mm Boost 28-Spoke Rear Wheel - Silver combines the RX24 aluminium rim with the Pro 5 hub. It is designed and assembled by Hope in Barnoldswick, England. This is the brand’s versatile gravel wheel: a low-profile, robust and repairable aluminium build designed for long-distance riding and bikepacking as well as weekend outings.

The rim is made from welded 6069 aluminium, shot-blasted and then anodised black, with neutral grey decals. Its 24 mm internal width and 23 mm profile accommodate tubeless tyres from 32 to 50 mm, and up to 60 mm for the widest setups. It comes pre-taped, with an aluminium tubeless valve matching the hub colour. Hope states a maximum system weight of 130 kg, including bike and luggage.

This wheel uses J-bend spokes, the most widely available type: any workshop can supply a replacement spoke, which matters on a touring bike. The black double-butted Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples prioritise durability over saving a few grams, a choice that suits its intended use.

The Pro 5 hub uses Hope’s own pawl mechanism, with a 54-tooth ratchet ring and six offset pawls providing 108 points of engagement, or 3.33° between engagement points. The bearings are replaceable, and most wear parts remain available individually.

Choose the freehub body variant to suit your drivetrain — Microspline, Shimano HG or SRAM XDR. It can also be removed later.

Wheel sold individually. Choose 6-bolt or Centerlock disc mounting from the available variants.

Frequently asked questions

Which freehub body should I choose: Shimano HG, Microspline or SRAM XDR?

The choice depends on your cassette. Shimano HG fits Shimano 8- to 11-speed cassettes and HG-compatible SRAM cassettes. Microspline is required for Shimano 12-speed cassettes. SRAM XDR is needed for SRAM 12-speed road and gravel cassettes, such as XPLR, Force or Red.

The freehub body on a Hope Pro 5 hub can be removed and replaced later, but ordering the right standard from the outset is simpler and less expensive.

12 x 135/142 mm or 12 x 148 mm Boost: which spacing does my frame need?

Your frame’s spacing determines the choice, and there is no way to adapt one to the other. The vast majority of disc-brake gravel and road bikes use a 12 x 142 mm thru-axle; 135 mm is found on older frames. This version covers both.

Gravel bikes with very generous tyre clearance and mountain bike-derived frames use 12 x 148 mm Boost, which is available separately. Measure the spacing between your rear dropouts or consult your frame’s specifications before ordering.

What tyre width can I fit to a HOPE RX24?

Hope recommends 32 to 50 mm tyres for the RX24, with a tolerance of up to 60 mm for very wide setups. Its 24 mm internal width offers the best compromise with tyres around 38 to 45 mm, the most common range for versatile gravel riding.

Note: Hope’s PDF specifications give a slightly different range (30 to 64 mm) from its product page. If fitting a tyre at either end of the range, it is best to check with the tyre manufacturer.

24, 28 or 32 spokes: how do I choose?

More spokes make a wheel stronger and better able to carry loads, at the cost of a few dozen grams and a little extra drag. A 24-spoke wheel suits fast gravel riding and lighter to average-weight riders; 28 spokes is the versatile default; 32 spokes suits loaded bikepacking, heavier riders and rough terrain.

The maximum system weight remains 130 kg regardless of spoke count, including bike and luggage.

Standard (J-Bend) or Straight-Pull: what’s the difference?

The difference is the shape of the spoke where it enters the hub. A J-Bend, also called Standard, is a conventional spoke with a bent head: it is widely available from repair shops, making repairs easier when travelling. A Straight-Pull spoke has no bend: this eliminates the area where most breaks start and helps it maintain tension over time.

The two versions are not interchangeable: they use different hubs. For bikepacking far from repair facilities, J-Bend remains easiest to repair; for performance and long-term spoke durability, Straight-Pull has the advantage.

6-bolt or Centerlock: which HOPE RX24 version should I choose?

This refers to how the brake rotor attaches to the hub, and it must match your rotors. A 6-bolt rotor attaches with six Torx bolts; a Centerlock rotor fits using a cassette lockring tool, making installation quicker and lighter. The RX24 is available in both versions; select the one you need from the variants.

If you’re unsure, check your current rotors: six bolts around the hub mean 6-bolt; a central splined lockring means Centerlock. Centerlock-to-6-bolt adapters are available, but not the reverse.

Does the wheel come ready for tubeless setup?

Yes. The rim comes from the factory already taped, and a Hope Presta valve matching the hub colour is supplied with the wheel. All that remains is to fit the tyre and add sealant, which is not included.

Allow around 60 ml of sealant for a 40 to 45 mm gravel tyre, and use a high-volume air source (a compressor or reservoir pump) to seat the beads on the first fitting.

HOPE RX24 aluminium or RX40 carbon: which should I choose?

The RX24 is a low-profile (23 mm) aluminium wheel designed for versatile gravel riding and bikepacking: robust, repairable, available with 24, 28 or 32 spokes, and considerably more affordable. The RX40 is a 40 mm-deep carbon wheel that is lighter and more aerodynamic, aimed at fast gravel riding and racing.

For carrying luggage, rough trails or a tighter budget, choose the RX24. For speed on smoother routes, choose the RX40. Both feature the same Pro 5 hub and the same quality of British manufacturing.

Is the HOPE RX24 rear wheel sold individually or as a pair?

This wheel is sold individually. To make a pair, match it with the HOPE RX24 700C PRO 5 front wheel in the same colour, with the same spoke count and spoke type (Standard or Straight-Pull), choosing 12 x 100 mm or 12 x 110 mm Boost according to your fork.

Selling the wheels separately also means you can replace just one if it breaks.
