Description

The HOPE RX40 700C PRO 5 Straight-Pull 12x135/142 mm rear wheel pairs the RX40 carbon rim with the Pro 5 Centerlock straight-pull hub, designed and assembled by Hope in Barnoldswick, England. Together with the RX40 front wheel, it makes a versatile gravel wheelset suited to both fast road sections and smooth trails.

The 40 mm-deep hookless rim measures 25.5 mm internally and 30 mm externally, making it suitable for 32 to 60 mm tyres set up tubeless. It comes pre-taped with a Hope Presta valve matched to the hub. The 24 Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes maintain stiffness under torque despite the rear wheel’s pronounced dish, at a claimed weight of 838 g.

The Pro 5 hub has a 54-tooth freehub with six offset pawls, providing 108 engagement points and 3.33° between engagements. Pedal pickup is immediate — valuable when accelerating out of a technical section. Choose the freehub body to suit your drivetrain — Shimano HG, Microspline or SRAM XDR — from the available variants; it can also be removed later.

Wheel sold individually, with a Centerlock disc brake mount.

Frequently asked questions

Which freehub body should I choose: Shimano HG, Microspline or SRAM XDR?

The choice depends on your cassette. Shimano HG fits Shimano 8- to 11-speed cassettes and HG-compatible SRAM cassettes. Microspline is required for Shimano 12-speed cassettes. SRAM XDR is needed for SRAM 12-speed road and gravel cassettes, such as XPLR, Force or Red.

The freehub body on a Hope Pro 5 hub can be removed and replaced later, but ordering the right standard from the outset is simpler and less expensive.

12 x 135/142 mm or 12 x 148 mm Boost: which spacing does my frame need?

Your frame’s spacing determines the choice, and there is no way to adapt one to the other. The vast majority of disc-brake gravel and road bikes use a 12 x 142 mm thru-axle; 135 mm is found on older frames. This version covers both.

Gravel bikes with very generous tyre clearance and mountain bike-derived frames use 12 x 148 mm Boost, which is available separately. Measure the spacing between your rear dropouts or consult your frame’s specifications before ordering.

Which tyres can I fit to a HOPE RX40 hookless rim?

The RX40 rim is hookless: it requires a tubeless tyre explicitly approved for hookless rims, with a width of 32 to 60 mm. Avoid tyres intended for use with inner tubes and tyres whose manufacturer does not confirm this compatibility, because on a hookless rim the bead is held in place solely by internal pressure.

The 25.5 mm internal width works best with 40 to 50 mm tyres, which will have an actual width slightly greater than their stated size. Probikeshop specifies hookless compatibility on the listings for the relevant gravel tyres.

What pressure should I use for a tyre on a hookless rim?

A hookless rim has a lower maximum pressure than a hooked rim, and the lower of the rim’s and tyre’s limits always applies. Consult the Hope instructions supplied with the wheel and the tyre manufacturer’s recommendations before inflating.

In practice, gravel tyres 40 mm and wider are generally run well below these limits. Exceeding them is mainly a concern with narrow tyres inflated to road-bike pressures.

Does the wheel come ready for tubeless setup?

Yes. The rim comes from the factory already taped, and a Hope Presta valve matching the hub colour is supplied with the wheel. All that remains is to fit the tyre and add sealant, which is not included.

Allow around 60 ml of sealant for a 40 to 45 mm gravel tyre, and use a high-volume air source (a compressor or reservoir pump) to seat the beads on the first fitting.

Can I fit a 6-bolt rotor to this wheel?

This wheel’s Pro 5 hub has a Centerlock mount: a Centerlock rotor fits directly using a cassette lockring tool. To reuse an existing 6-bolt rotor, you need a Centerlock-to-6-bolt adapter that screws onto the hub.

In that case, check clearance at your brake caliper: on some setups, the adapter shifts the rotor slightly outwards.

What’s the difference between a HOPE Pro 5 hub and a Pro 4?

The Pro 5 succeeded the Pro 4 in Hope’s range. It has a 54-tooth freehub with six offset pawls, giving 108 engagement points and 3.33° between engagements, compared with 44 engagement points on the Pro 4. In practice, pedalling picks up much more quickly, which you can feel when accelerating on trails or putting the power down after a technical section.

Is the HOPE RX40 rear wheel sold individually or as a pair?

This wheel is sold individually. To make a complete pair, match it with the HOPE RX40 700C PRO 5 front wheel in the same hub colour, choosing 12 x 100 mm or 12 x 110 mm Boost according to your fork.

Selling the wheels separately also lets you replace just one if it breaks, or mix front and rear axle standards.
